It's Always Warm at Christus Rex by Jennifer Laabs

It was the cold that brought me into Christus Rex for the first time. I lived behind the church and was walking to campus when I thought maybe taking a short cut through the building would warm me up. It just so happened on that day, they were serving hot soup for lunch. Little did I know that more then my stomach was going to be fed and the comfort went much deeper then a warm building in the North Dakota temperature. I found something that I wasn’t aware I was missing. It was a community of faith where I strengthened my relationship with God. I met wonderful people who surprised me with kindness and inclusiveness. I learned about myself and was accepted by others whether we were drinking hot cider or discussing deep life issues.

My name is Jennifer Laabs. I went to church at Christus Rex in the late 1980s. I saw the changes that happened in the building including getting rid of the huge orange or red dot that must have been considered art the decade before. I got to help a little with the beautiful mosaic and was able to see the transformed beauty of the Sanctuary. Tabula became a part of the Rex, bringing many students in from campus. As I visit from time to time, I also see the good works that are happening. People are helping others through service. The church continues to welcome and invite all people but is especially a place where students can grow spiritually alongside their higher education.

While I was growing up, I attended church and was confirmed. However, the transition from youth to adulthood was a time where I didn’t feel a part of a church. I felt lost not knowing who I was, where I belonged or how to be in the world. This is where campus ministry made such a positive change in my life. It was at Christus Rex where I sang, laughed, cried, talked, worshipped, and got to know that I am a child of God and am never alone. After I graduated, I have been able to find a family in faith in Bismarck because of the experience in Grand Forks . I am a Godparent to a beautiful eight year old boy named Justin. I can tell him about community and faith. Even during difficult times, I still smile because I am comforted and feel the warmth of God’s grace that led me into the church that cold North Dakota day.
